MOTOR ASSEMBLY AT TMS UK FACILITY
An Overview of Motion Control
The phrase "motion control" is widely used to describe the accurate control of parameters such as torque, speed, acceleration and position using electronically controlled motors mostly in the power range up to about 5kW, although it can be at higher powers. There are a number of different types of motor used in motion control. These include brushed and brushless servo motors and stepper motors. Stepper motors usually work open loop, meaning there is no feedback to indicate to the controller where the motor is. This is fine provided the motors are correctly sized for the job with excess torque. Servo motors are controlled via a feedback device such as an encoder or resolver and control position "on the fly". As a result they are more expensive but achieve higher accuracy and higher powers. Applications are vast in range covering all types of manufacturing, research, science and education. One typical application is automatic assembly of printed circuit boards. In this case a very fast and accurate 3 axis positioning system picks up each component in turn and places it in the correct place on the board.

GMBM Series Brushless Servo Motors
Glentek introduces the newest member (GMBM series) of high performance, permanent magnet brushless servo motors to its complete line of servo motors. The GMBM series motors incorporate worldwide standard metric mounting configurations and have been tooled for high volume production which makes them easy to use and extremely cost effective. All frame sizes utilize high-energy Neodymium-Iron-Boron (NdFeB) magnets which when combined with low inertia rotors, provide high dynamic performance. Due to the high torque to inertia ratio of these motors, they are ideal for applications which require high acceleration and deceleration characteristics. In addition, all frame sizes incorporate skewed magnets which provide ultra smooth operation (i.e. low cogging torque) at all speeds. They range in continuous torques from 0.11 Nm to 42.8 Nm and peak torques from 0.32 Nm to 128.4 Nm. Typical applications include factory automation machinery, fitness equipment (i.e. treadmills), labeling machinery, machine tools, material handling machinery, medical equipment (i.e. CAT scanners and PET scanners), packaging machinery, printing machinery, robotics, semiconductor machinery, surface mount pick and place machines, x-y tables, textile machinery, applications which are cost sensitive, have low to medium reflected load inertias and require a high dynamic response, applications which require smooth operation and/or applications which require a lot of torque in a small mechanical form factor.
Glentek's Omega Series Digital PWM Brushless Servo Amplifiers offer the latest in high performance DSP control of both rotary and linear brushless servo motors. With extensive utilization of surface mount technology and special heat transfer techniques, the Omega Series offers one of the worlds most powerful products for a given form factor. The Omega Series is comprised of the following models:
Full Feature Servo Amplifier
The Full Feature servo amplifier operates in current (torque) or velocity (RPM) mode, accepts a +/-10V analog input as a command reference and commutates the motor sinusoidally for ultra smooth operation at low speeds. It requires an incremental encoder to derive the velocity signal and to commutate the motor. The absolute commutation angle is usually determined using Hall sensors or encoder Commutation tracks. Special versions are also available that decode Sanyo Denki, Tamagawa and Yaskawa reduced wire encoders.
2-Phase Current Mode Servo Amplifier
The 2-Phase Current Mode servo amplifier accepts two +/-10V analog inputs as current command references for two of the motor phases and derives the third command reference. This amplifier does not use any feedback devices and is used with controllers that provide the commutation.
Pulse Follower Servo Amplifier
The Pulse Follower servo amplifier incorporates all the features of the Full Feature servo amplifier and also accepts two digital pulse inputs as a position command reference. The two pulse inputs are high speed, differential and optically isolated digital inputs which can be configured to decode three pulse types and can be geared up or down (electronic gearing). The motor position and speed are a function of the number of pulses and the rate of the pulses respectively. The following pulse types can be decoded:
Quadrature Two pulse inputs in quadrature, such as the output of an incremental encoder or an encoder pot determine both command distance and direction. This pulse decoding is useful to slave one motor to another by connecting the master motors encoder output to the slave motors pulse inputs.
Pulse (step) and Direction The first input is a pulse train used to establish the absolute distance and velocity of the command and the second input is a direction signal used to establish the polarity of the command. This pulse type is output by many stepper motor controllers and allows upgrading a stepper motor system to a servo motor system without the need to change controllers.
CW/CCW Pulse mode The first input is a pulse train to command positive moves and the second input is a pulse train to command negative moves. This pulse type is also generated by some older stepper motor controllers and may be useful in upgrading to a servo motor system.
GM Series
The GM series utilizes traditional ferrite magnets which are ideal for cost sensitive applications. In addition, the higher inertia armatures provide improved motor to load inertia matching for medium to high inertia loads. This helps to reduce the mechanical shaft resonance which allows higher servo gains with increased stability. All frame sizes incorporate skewed armatures, which provide ultra smooth operation (i.e. low cogging torque) at all speeds. They range in continuous torques from 0.21 Nm to 12.8 Nm and peak torques from 1.4 Nm to 38.1 Nm. Typical applications include factory automation machinery, fitness equipment (i.e. treadmills), labeling machinery, machine tools, material handling machinery, medical equipment (i.e. CAT scanners and PET scanners), packaging machinery, printing machinery, robotics, x-y tables, textile machinery, cost sensitive applications, applications which require smooth operation and/or applications which have medium to high reflected load inertias.
GMR Series
The GMR series utilizes high-energy Neodymium-Iron-Boron (NdFeB) magnets, which provide more torque in a smaller package with higher dynamic performance than traditional ferrite magnet designs. Due to the high torque to inertia ratio of these motors, they are ideal for applications which require high acceleration and deceleration characteristics or where the physical size of the motor is a major concern. They range in continuous torques from 1.81 Nm to 7.34 Nm and peak torques from 9.04 Nm to 36.72 Nm. Typical applications include factory automation machinery, fitness equipment (i.e. treadmills), labeling machinery, machine tools, material handling machinery, medical equipment (i.e. CAT scanners and PET scanners), packaging machinery, printing machinery, robotics, semiconductor machinery, surface mount pick and place machines, x-y tables, textile machinery, applications which have low to medium reflected load inertias and require a high dynamic response, applications which require smooth operation and/or applications which require a lot of torque in a small mechanical form factor.
Glentek offers the latest in high performance Analog PWM (Pulse Width Modulated) Servo Amplifiers for the control of both DC brush servo motors and voice coil motors. With extensive utilization of surface mount technology and special heat transfer techniques, Glenteks SMA7110, SMA7115, SMA7130, SMA71075 and SMA71100 series amplifiers offer one of the worlds most powerful products for a given form factor. All models can operate in current (torque) or velocity (RPM) mode and accept a +/-10V analog input as a command reference. All models can close the velocity loop via feedback of a DC tachometer. In addition, models SMA7130, SMA71075 and SMA71100 can close the velocity loop via feedback of an incremental encoder. They provide a range of continuous currents from 6 amps to 100 amps and peak currents from 12 amps to 150 amps. Operating voltages range from 30-220 VDC for Module configurations or 110-130 VAC for Stand Alone and Multi-Axis configurations. For a complete description of the mounting configurations offered, please refer to the Mounting Configurations Section.

By supplying a 0-5 VDC input or connecting a simple potentiometer, this BLDC motor is easy to control. Terminal block connections allow this motor/driver to be easily installed into any application. A pulse output is provided to digitally read the speed the shaft is turning. The average value of the voltage on PG is directly proportional to speed, so this output can be used as a true tachometer for speed feedback with an external filter or averaging circuit which usually consists of a resistor and capacitor (i.e. 20k and 0.1uF).
